SIGGRAPH Electronic Theatre stands alone in curating and showcasing the very best of computer animation since its inception. Every year, highly respected jurors choose from among hundreds of submissions to select the year's best comptuer animations, to be shown at the SIGGRAPH annual conference.

SIGGRAPH and the Internet Archive have collaborated to bring online pieces from the 2001 collection whose owners agreed to be included in SIGGRAPH's web archive. We hope it provides an enjoyable and useful tool for scientists, engineers, mathematicians, artists, filmmakers, computer graphics professionals, and all animaniacs!

This narrated computer animation shows results from a research project involving simulated Darwinian evolutions of virtual block creatures. A population of several hundred creatures is created within a supercomputer, and each creature is tested for their ability to perform a given task, such the ability to swim in a simulated water environment. The successful survive, and their virtual genes containing coded instructions for their growth, are copied, combined, and mutated to make offspring for...

This short computer animation depicts the upcoming struggle between the virtual and physical sides of our selves, where our bodies are left behind as technology enhances our ability to exist in virtual worlds. A collection of techniques were used to produce this animation. Particle systems were used to disassemble and reconstruct various images. Artificial evolution and interpolation of 3D parametric shapes allowed the creation of unusual surface transformations. Morphing techniques produced...

A predatory reptile makes a cute pet when it's young, but can it be fun to eat from a can instead of catching food on the hoof? And what if the owner gives up trying to care properly for it? Only really well prepared people can take care of an adult exotic pet well enough to give it a pleasant life.

''Pasta for War'' satirizes a 1930's propaganda newsreel. It begins with fresh pasta marching towards the podium. There, the Great Dictator orates. A young recruit envisions formations of dive bombing bow-ties flying above columns of ravioli tanks, while he wades through marinara sauce to battle against utensils at the bottom of the sink. The realisation that he may die ends his fantasy, but his comrades march ever forward, to their impending doom - a towering pot of boiling water.

The title written in Chinese means the way to reach true knowledge. I tried to depict my own realization of the circle of life in this animation, the destined suffering since the birth, the paralyzed salvation after the death and the voidness of meaning. The only way to escape from the circle of life is to see it and to realize it, although the realization evaporates in a moment. I wanted to see it to show it. Conceived as a critique of traditional architectural ''flythroughs'' and perhaps a glimpse into the future of online environments, this short film documents the investigation of an abandoned house from multiple points of view. The ''handheld'' camera movement was accomplished through four layers of motion capture data via the mouse. The house was designed and modeled in form-Z, animation in 3ds max, and rendering in mental ray. AfterEffects and Combustion were used for compositing and graphics.

This video presents the system described in the Siggraph 01 paper by the same name. We attempt to capture the sight, touch, and feeling of the artistic painting process by providing the traditional tools of a painter. This allows anyone to control a virtual brush as he or she would a real brush. To achieve this, we have designed a physically-based, deformable, 3D brush model and bi-directional, two-layer, paint model. These allow the user to produce complex brush strokes intuitively. This video demonstrated our technique forapproximating the sounds that are generated by the motions of solid objects. As the motions of the objects are computed, theirsurfaces are analyzed to determine how the motion will induce acoustic pressure waves in the surrounding medium. Our technique computes the propagation of those wavesto the listener and then uses the resultsto generate sounds corresponding to the behavior of the simulated objects. Perestroika (pur es troiku) was created as a form of representing a sudden change. Though its Russian political ties are evident, ôperestroikaö, meaning restructuring, is to be taken in the more literal sense of the word. It is rather an individualÆs realization to change what he once believed to be something else. Aided by his aboriginal self, his actions threaten to throw the balance off current reality. Software: Newtek Lightwave 6.5, Adobe Photoshop 6, Adobe Afterfx 4.1, Sasquatch

This work was created by editing in-game demo scenes of our PlayStation 2 game ?METAL GEAR SOLID 2 SONS OF LIBERTY? planned for a 2001 release. Almost all of the scenes consist of materials rendered at ?real time? on a home game console instead of an expensive and high-spec computer. This is our challenge striving for ?CG footage that you can touch? instead of ?CG footage you watch.?
